A second arm of medical practice
Lifestyle & Behavioural Medicine
Medical consultations exploring how behaviour, attention, emotion, social context and physiology interact in health and illness.
Treatment is individualised and may incorporate Lifestyle Medicine, motivational interviewing, CBT-informed behavioural strategies and, where clinically appropriate, clinical hypnosis.
Two connected areas of practice
Medicine, perception and experience
More than two decades in anaesthesia have provided Dr Michael Ayling with a distinctive clinical perspective on changes in awareness, pain modulation, physiological arousal and the ways attention, expectation and context can influence perception and experience.
Lifestyle and Behavioural Medicine extends that interest beyond the procedural environment, using evidence-informed behavioural approaches to help people understand patterns, develop skills and make purposeful changes.
Areas of focus
Where would you like to start?
IBS & Gut–Brain Interaction
For appropriately assessed disorders involving communication between the digestive system and nervous system.
Fears, Phobias & Procedural Anxiety
Individualised work with specific fears and anxiety around medical, dental or other procedures.
Persistent Pain & Physical Symptoms
Behavioural approaches that complement appropriate medical assessment and multidisciplinary care.
Lifestyle & Behaviour Change
Collaborative support for sustainable changes in the behaviours that influence health.
What Is Clinical Hypnosis?
A medically grounded explanation of focused attention, therapeutic suggestion and what treatment involves.
For Health Professionals
Scope, referral considerations and collaborative care information for treating clinicians.
What to expect
A consultation, not a formula
The initial consultation considers the problem in context: medical history, current care, relevant lifestyle factors, patterns that maintain the difficulty, and what meaningful improvement would look like.
No technique is automatically suitable for every person. Clinical hypnosis, when used, forms part of a broader medical and behavioural formulation.
