Lifestyle and Behavioural Medicine consultations designed to complement the work of GPs, specialists, psychologists and other treating clinicians.
Clinical scope
A medical adjunct to existing care
Consultations may draw on Lifestyle Medicine, motivational interviewing, CBT-informed behavioural strategies and clinical hypnosis where appropriate.
The service does not replace necessary diagnostic assessment, acute psychiatric care, substance-dependence treatment or specialist psychological treatment. Suitability and scope are considered individually.
Potential referral areas
Problems involving behaviour, attention and physiology
Gut–brain interaction
IBS and related disorders following appropriate medical assessment.
Fears and procedures
Specific phobias, procedural anxiety and preparation for medical or dental treatment.
Persistent symptoms
Behavioural support within appropriate multidisciplinary care for pain or physical symptoms.
Health behaviour change
Collaborative Lifestyle Medicine work focused on sustainable behaviour change.
Referral information
What is helpful to include
Please include the relevant diagnosis or presenting concern, medical and psychological history, current treatment, important investigations, the purpose of referral and any clinical risks or coordination needs.
For IBS and disorders of gut–brain interaction, confirmation of appropriate assessment and relevant investigations is particularly helpful.
With patient consent, relevant communication can be provided to the referrer.
