From intention to sustainable action

Lifestyle & Behaviour Change

Knowing what supports health is not always the same as being able to make it happen consistently.

The clinical perspective

The six pillars, applied personally

Lifestyle Medicine combines evidence about health behaviours with a collaborative understanding of motivation, context, habits, barriers and personal priorities.

Consultations may consider nutrition, physical activity, restorative sleep, mental wellbeing, avoidance of hazardous substances and social connection.

The goal is not perfection or a standardised prescription. It is to identify changes that matter clinically, fit the person’s circumstances and can be sustained over time.

How the work is approached

Assessment, formulation and practical change

Clarify priorities

Choose a manageable focus based on health needs and what matters to the individual.

Understand behaviour

Examine cues, rewards, competing demands, confidence and previous attempts.

Design practical steps

Translate broad intentions into specific actions and supportive environments.

Review and adapt

Use setbacks as information and adjust the plan without moral judgement.

Important context

Part of appropriate clinical care

Suitability is assessed individually. No particular outcome can be guaranteed, and another form of medical, psychological or allied-health care may sometimes be more appropriate.

Where other clinicians are involved, coordinated care is encouraged.
